* Work and Pensions Secretary John Mutton has named 11 regions to be granted Cities Strategy pathfinder status. The government will provide £5m to help the 11 - and two London areas named earlier develop integrated welfare plans to get people on benefits back to work.

* Scottish Health Minister Andy Kerr has sent a senior management team to take control of Western Isles health board, which has been dogged by controversy over claims of financial mismanagement. Kerr is to visit the region himself next week to talk to board members.

* Funds meant to combat sexually transmitted infections are being used by health trusts to reduce deficits, the Independent Advisory Group on Sexual Health and HIV has wamed. lt adds that a £300m programme might collapse, as only 30 of 191 trusts are spending the necessary funds.

* The Howard League for Penal Reform is demanding that some women's prisons are closed as part of an attempt to reduce re-offending. …
