SPRINGTIME IN L.A. by Marilyn Mears, CPM Way down here in L.A. (Lower Alabama), spring slips in with collective anticipation by the locals. By March, the air off Mobile Bay is warm with the sweet promise of honeysuckle and magnolia. The Gulf beckons us to shed our winter skins in preparation for fishing, boating, and hammock sleeping. Mondays, the enemies that bring us to work, don't seem to fit into this scene, but somehow they never stop arriving.

One such Monday, I sat at a red light trading glowering scowls with other drivers, thinking of how we all abhor Mondays in spring.

Suddenly, my rearview mirror filled with the image of a beautiful young woman with legs up to here and short shorts barely down to there and long, dark hair that flowed as she skated in and out of the dead-still traffic. She skated a small circle in front of my car and, with a flourish, was gone. I grinned and silently thanked her as I made my way to the building I manage.

At about 12:45 I got in the elevator to leave for lunch. The doors opened to a lobby full of my tenants, just standing around. …
