A MAN'S MAN

HE MAY BE STRAIGHT, BUT MATTHEW RHYS HAS BEEN WITH MORE BOYS THAN YOU.

Matthew Rhys knows life can get interesting for straight actors who play gay a littSe too convincingly. When he's out pubbing in his macho hometown of Cardiff in the United Kingdom, rowdy drunks"occasionally approach the Welshman to ask if he's really a poofter. "I've realized that smart-ass replies like 'Maybe' or Only on Saturdays' can get me in trouble," he admits with a laugh.

Rhys did a racy gay play called Cardiff East at the Royal National Theatre in London. "It was about the relationship between two rough young lads that sort of erupts," he chuckles. "There was an explicit scene where I spat in my hand and mounted my costar on the bed. It was very Brokeback Mountain"

Rhys also starred in Be Brave, a Welsh-language TV movie about a young man coming out in a small mining community. …
