Anti-discrimination Resources on the Internet

For risk managers interested in locating resources on the subjects of discrimination, equal opportunity employment, employment liability or harassment in the workplace, the World Wide Web has several informative sites provided by commercial and govemment sources. The U.S. Department of Labor (www.dol.gov) has a searchable Web site that provides a range of statistical and regulatory information. In the department's compliance section, information sheets are available summarizing how the Fair Labor Standards Act applies to various industries. Explanations of 1996 amendments are also provided.

HR Cyberspace (www.shrm.org/ cyberspace/top20.html) is a monthly column of Human Resource magazine, which is published by the Society for Human Resource Management. The column reviews sites associated with human resources, employee benefit plans and training. One of the linked sites is Training.Net (www.trainingnet. com), which has an online discussion forum on sexual harassment in the workplace moderated by trial attorneys and other legal experts. Law Journal Extra!, the employment and labor law section of the National Law Journal site, provides dozens of links, articles, cases and resources. The site includes daily news and litigation summaries as well as information on other workplace issues, as well as direct links to more than 25 related federal government and state agencies.

Labor Consultants of America (www.laborconsultants.com/watch.htm) is dedicated to preventing loss and litigation in the workplace by providing employers with risk management programs, products and training. The company's Web site lists products, articles on discrimination, employee issues and harassment in the workplace, a calendar of events and product descriptions. One product, THE WATCHTM is a risk management system designed to prevent and uncover wrongdoing in the workplace. THE WATCHTM consists of three separate programs: The Employee Protection LineT, dispute management services and risk management services.
