What-if tax planning can be made more convenient by using the DR Tax templates, which have been designed for use in either Lotus 1-2-3 or Excel. The DR Tax templates are simply copied into a subdirectory and they are immediately ready for use. Separate templates are provided for each federal filing status (e.g., head of household, joint filing separately). The templates provide tax planning data for both the federal and a specified state. Currently, templates are available for New York, New Jersey, and California.

When you open the DR Tax template, you are presented with menu choices such as permanent facts about the client, the gross income schedule, etc. Pressing the Alt key and the appropriate letter takes you to an appropriate section of the spreadsheet. You then enter taxpayer information and summary data (i.e., total federal taxes paid) on the appropriate lines. The data entry sections of the template are well designed and highlighted in color, which makes it easy to find things. …
