Idea houses in four Western cities offer new concepts and products

Whether you're planning a remodel or just thinking about it, you should check out one of the idea houses now open to the public at design centers in San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, and Dallas. These interior-design showcases are brimming with new ideas and products, and they show homeowners how to pull everything together tastefully and cohesively.

Created by Joe Ruggiero, a Californiabased designer and television personality, the idea houses reflect a continuity in style not usually seen in showcases. The exhibits are all completely different, and the products displayed can be purchased through the participating showrooms in each center.

San Francisco's idea house is the largest of the series, occupying a 9,000square-foot space at the San Francisco Design Center (formerly the Showplace and Galleria Design Centers). It focuses on three distinct lifestyles. There is Matthew's sophisticated "Nob Hill" flat, Susan and Jon's airy "Marina" apartment. and the stylish "Sea Cliff" home of Charles and Nora. While the owners are fictitious, the homes have been created with real people in mind.
