Studying and enjoying the natural world is a lifelong project, and the best place for children to start is in their own backyards. To help children learn about and observe birds and butterflies in backyard habitats, the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) has released two new educational comic books.

Bird Basics introduces young people to bird life.

The comic book's colorful pictures and entertaining story teach children how birds fly and eat, their life cycles and the mysteries of bird behavior and song. Readers see how different birds live in different habitats. Also, they learn how to welcome birds to their own backyards by providing habitats with appropriate food, water and plants. Bird Basics has been reviewed for accuracy by the Birding Association and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.

Similarly, Backyard Butter flies introduces young people to butterflies, their life cycle and habitats. The comic book's young characters plant a garden to attract butterflies and observe their lives throughout the year. Readers learn how to provide caterpillars and butterflies with food and nectar plants, how to observe them as they grow, and how they play a role in a healthy environment. …
