Simon & Schuster Announces Launch of Internet Supersite

Article excerpt

Simon & Schuster has announced the launch of an Internet "supersite" comprising more than 100 World Wide Web sites in education, business, professional, computer book, reference, and trade publishing. The site, which features free multiple-media content, the full text of many books, downloadable software, an array of subscription-based services, and the ability to order Simon & Schuster books online, is located at http://www.simon andschuster.com.

Simon & Schuster, which claims to be the world's largest English-language book publisher, expects to publish more than 500,000 HTML pages on the site and to generate more than $100 mii!ion in Webrelated revenues through the sale of books and software over the Internet, books about the Internet, online content, transactions like travel arrangements, and advertising in 1997. Average daily traffic is expected to exceed 1 million hits each day, according to the company.

"The Internet's rapid growth makes a publisher's job-exercising editorial judgment to choose, nurture, and amplify ideas-that much more important," said Jonathan Newcomb, Simon & Schuster's president and CEO. "The Internet provides a whole new way to make information public with immediacy and economy. The online possibilities for a global publisher with 350,000 copyrights are extraordinary. Because the Internet was originally created to deliver content, it is truly redefining the publishing business. Our supersite updates both the printed word and our multiple-media content.' While extending our brands and creating new products in cyberspace, it gives readers customized information and options to access and purchase that information."

The following features are among the highlights of the Simon & Schuster site:

* Arthur Frommer's Outspoken
