Practice management consultant Judy Bee suggests doctors give their patients a handout explaining managed care, with some health tips tacked on. Here's her example: You have joined a managed-care health plan. Your physicians are trying to control the cost of your care so you and your employer can afford the coverage you need. You can help by following some simple guidelines.

1. When you call for an appointment, we need to know exactly what's bothering you. That lets us give you the time you need, when you need it. I have told my scheduler to ask questions that will help her do a good job for me and for you. She may ask you to talk to a nurse. It could save you a trip to the office.

2. We want you to stay healthy and we encourage preventive care like flu shots, back-to-school care, and annual physicals. Please schedule them well in advance, because we need to save time each day for sick patients. …
