NHS Foundation Trust Numbers Go Past 50

NHS foundation trusts passed a milestone last week, but their growing strength must be matched by better commissioning, trust regulator Monitor has said.

As Monitor announced three new foundation trusts from November 1, taking the number past 50, its chair, William Moyes, said trusts would continue to grow in numbers and authority.

There are now 52, with a total income of £10.3bn. More are due to be authorised on December 1. Monitor is working on plans to extend the initiative to community service providers.

'With foundation trusts now delivering on their intended role as strong providers, it is essential that primary care trusts develop their capacity to commission effectively, with clear contracts and system rules observed by both sides,' Moyes said. …
