Alabama Association Piloting Pharmaceutical Care Model

The Alabama Pharmacy Association (APA) is moving forward with plans to create a national pharmaceutical care model that will integrate pharmacists into disease management programs run by managed care organizations (MCOs) and other third-party groups. The model could help place R.Ph.s on pharmaceutical care teams based in physician practices and MCOs.

Development of the pharmaceutical care model is being funded by a $13,000 award from Merck & Co., Whitehouse Station, N.J. The award is one of three gifts Merck granted to the National Council of State Pharmacy Association Executives this year. The other two beneficiaries are the Texas Pharmacy Association, which is developing two manuals on pharmaceutical care (see previous story), and a joint project by the Iowa Pharmacists Association and the Wisconsin Pharmacists Association to create a national home study course for pharmacy technicians seeking certification (see next story).
