* Education minister Beverley Hughes has said that the target of 2,500 extended schools in place by September has been exceeded, with more than 3,000 offering access to extended services. 'Extended services not only benefit young people, their families and wider communities but the schools which offer them,' she said.

* MSPs have identified 'serious problems' with the Scottish Executive's policy of free personal care for the elderly. At least 75% of Scottish councils have backlogs of patients waiting for care, ranging from five days to four months, the Holyrood health committee says.

* The Local Government Association has made two new senior appointments. Jenny Crighton becomes director of corporate strategy and public affairs, and Stephen Jones, finance director for Revenue & Customs, has been appointed director of finance and performance. …
