Suicide as Usual vs. Cult Suicide

The media rarely comment on society's suicidal decision to rely on the automobile, which resuits in thousands of highway deaths each year. Nor do the media analyze the suicidal choice of consuming products whose manufacture pollutes the environment and decreases the ozone with resulting increases in cancer, or the suicidal choice made by those in corporate life who compete for power and wealth at the expense of health--threatening and eventually life-threatening levels of stress. These are all "OK suicides" because they involve maintaining the existng social order.

But the media go bananas with delight when some New Age sect decides to check out of the planet. They never ask about the meaning-deficits in daily life that open people to this level of desperation and irrationality-just as these deficits have opened others to the slower forms of suicide available in the mind- and spiritdeadening routines of the competitive marketplace.

It's not the number of cultmember deaths (fewer than those who die in a week of car accidents or from cancer due to smoking); it's the source that makes this headline news. …
