A retrospective of the first issue of each year that Dance Spirit has been in publication.

PREMIERE ISSUE In 1997, animal prints and dark eye-makeup were in-and the High Kicking Heels of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill sported the look in style. We spotted this group while at the 1997 NCA Collegiate Championships in Daytona Beach, FL. They won second place in Division IA. While rehearsing the routine that we eventually shot for the accompanying step-by-step in that issue, the group hit this cover-worthy pose.

MARCH 1998

By 1998 ,the number of yearly issues had jumped from four to six. The first issue of '98 was March. Front and center, from the "Fame L. A. "TV show that was getting ready to begin its second season, was Roselyn Sanchez, who has since had a career in movies, TV and music.


The Parsons Dance Company was chosen to represent this issue's NYC theme. Robert Battle, top left, has since started his own company, Battleworks, and Jason McDoIe, second from bottom, is starring in TWyIa Tharp's The Times They Are A-Changin' on Broadway.


The touring company of Fosse had just hit the road when we got an exclusive "Steam Heat" step-by-step from the Broadway cast. On the cover was Elizabeth Parkinson-who went on to star in Twyla Tharp's Moviri Out-and Tyce Diorio, who toured with Janet Jackson and Jennifer Lopez and was a guest choreographer on "So You Think You Can Dance."


For this cover of New York City Ballet's Deanna McBrearty, we created a magical set with hanging tutus. …
