Playing trans on All My Children is no big deal-just make sure to call your Mom from the set.

"All My Children was always on in my house as I was growing up," recalls actor Jeffrey Carlson, who plays Zarf, a transsexual woman and wonderfully eccentric rock star on the long-running sudser. But what the 31-year-old didn't know until recently is that his mother, a longtime All My Children viewer, actually named him after Dr. Jeff Martin, one of her favorite characters on the venerable soap. "I was laughing so hard when she told me," Carlson says, "and I thought, 'Well, this is serendipitous.' "

Certainly, if anyone was meant to play Zarf, it is Carlson, who has a long resumé that prepared him to play daytime TV's first trans coming-out story. Just six months after graduating from Juilliard, the Long Beach, Calif., native landed the role of gay teen Billy in Edward Albee's The Goat, or, Who Is Sylvia? on Broadway. He went on to play a drag performer with a penchant for Judy Garland in the play Last Easter and Boy George's drag diva best friend, Marilyn, in the Broadway musical Taboo. …
