Walgreens R.Ph.S Put Patient Care Issues on Table

Negotiating a new labor contract with Walgreens, the National Pharmacists Association has put the focus on patient care, said Margaret Cozzone, business manager of the union that represents about 750 Walgreen R.Ph.s in Chicago and northeast Indiana. She added that when the members were surveyed about what was important to them, the resounding answer was stress reduction to improve patient care.

The R.Ph.s' wish list for Walgreens management includes compliance with the intent of the OBRA '90 patient counseling mandate, better customer service levels, and efforts to minimize prescription errors. It would also be nice to cut down the time spent on hassles stemming from third-party insurance plans.

"We're trying to attain proper staffing levels with properly trained ancillary personnel," said Cozzone. "That reduces the stress level, which reduces prescription errors and increases patient care." Walgreens declined to comment on the current negotiations. …
