Jazzed About Nature

PORTLAND, OR.... From misty images of rhododendrons and hemlock to a lustrous close-up of a Japanese maple to a rainbow over Big Indian Creek Gorge, photographer Steve Terrill's images capture nature at its most magnificent. His works have been selected as the poster for the Mt. Hood Festival of Jazz twice, and in 1996 he was one of only a few photographers to participate in a book project entitled Daybreak 2000 that dealt with the first light of the new millennium. His image of cottonwood seeds veiled over wildflowers in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area was displayed at the Smithsonian for three months. Terrill has over 20 books to his credit, with his newest-titled Sanctuaries, Retreats, and Sacred Places of Oregon-being published in 2007. This month, a show of Terrill's work called Captured Moments is on view at Yoshida's Fine Art Gallery through January 28. Price [1874-1950], a modernist painter who worked as a ranch hand and later as an illustrator, moved to Oregon in 1929. The subjects of his works were often rural, such as the animals and ranches of his younger days. Waddell, a rancher for many years, paints the range animals of the eastern Montana plains in a loose, painterly style that is both literal and abstracted. …
