Upbeat Generic Drug Industry Poised for Future Growth

Making the most of the David and Goliath analogy, generic pharmacy industry leaders expressed confidence that increasing support from a coalition that includes corporate America, trade associations, consumer groups, governors, and healthcare providers will help drive the demand for generic drugs over the next several years. The leaders were speaking at the Generic Pharmaceutical Association (GPhA) Annual Meeting & Educational Conference in Coral Gables, Fla.

A who's who of the generic industry hammered home the message that just about everyone is frustrated with the high cost of brand-name pharmaceuticals and that the political and social climate is ripe for generics to fill in the gap.

Carol Ben-Maimon, M.D., chair of GPhA, told a captive audience that the organization has been very aggressive in getting the message out that generics provide a safe, less expensive alternative to branded products. She said GPhA is fighting to remove barriers such as the Waxman-Hatch Act and drug company tactics that delay the entrance of generics to market. …
