Workshop on Development of Archives of Moving Images in Latin America

The "Regional Workshop on Development of Archives of Moving Images in Latin America" was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from November 20th to 25th, 1989, with Unesco's support and economic cooperation. It was organised by the Cinemateca Argentina who coordinated and planned the agenda jointly with Mr Carlos Arnaldo from the Division of Communication, Development and Free Flow of Information.

The purpose was to exchange information and see how it could best be applied to improve the activities of the Archives of the region. Participants were invited from Cineteca Nacional de Mexico; Filmoteca de la UNAM de Mexico; Cinemateca de Nicaragua, Cinemateca de Cuba; Fundacion Patrimonio Filmico Colombiano; Cinemateca Brasileira; Cinemateca do Museo de Arte Moderna de Rio; Archivo Nacional de la lmagen de. Montevideo; Cinemateca Uruguaya. The Museo Municipal del Cine (not in FIAF) represented by its director Guillermo Fernandez Jurado, was also invited to the Workshop.

A document was issued in support of the continuation of the work of Cinemateca Brasileira in the facilities of the Regional Center of Preservation in Sao Paulo. Various other documents in support of the installation of preservation regional center in Mexico, Havana and Bogota were also issued.

It was decided to form a committee to write a Procedures Manual and a unified catalogue card in order to exchange minimal information to start a Latin American Filmography. This committee was formed by the representatives of: Cinemateca Brasileira, Filmoteca de la UNAM, Fundacion Patrimonio Filmico Colombiano and Cinemateca Argentina, who are operating at present with the Micro-ISIS system, the committee will submit a draft copy of their conclusions toward February 1990. …
