In-Stat Predicts Internet TVs Will Fracture the Internet

In-Stat, a full-service, high-technology market research and information company serving the semiconductor, communications, computer, and converging multimedia marketplaces and part of the Cahners Publishing Co., predicts that television set and personal computer manufacturers will battle for dominance in your living room, instead of peacefully coexisting in a mythical convergence, according to a recent announcement by the company. This emerging battle is poised to fracture the Internet along a consumer and corporate fault line.

"With the Internet pervading the public's awareness, many large consumer electronics companies sense that their traditional niche-consumers' living and family rooms-is under attack by the personal computer industry," said In-Stat senior analyst Gerry Kaufhold.

"When content from the Internet becomes easily accessible to TV viewers, the Internet will fracture into two pieces: a computer-centric side and a TV-centric side," Kaufhold said. "Last year, those who accessed the Internet from their homes used the only method available, a PC. But WebTV will let you view any Web site on your TV set. …
