"My friends were shocked. They had no idea!"

This is how George Takei-known as Mr. SuIu to millions of Star Trek fans around the world-describes the reaction to his coming-out in 2005.

He so isn't serious.

"My friends were only feigning shock," Takei admits with a big laugh. "I've been together with my partner, Brad Altman, for almost zo years now, and certainly all our friends already knew [we were gay]. What I hadn't done was talk to the press about it. And we felt it was time."

Lately, Takei has had even more reason to talk to the press, since he's appearing in one of the season's most buzzed-about new series, NEC's Heroes. He's playing the father of Mas! Oka's popular character, Hiro, a Japanese office drone who can bend space and time. "I am a powerful industrialist and one of the richest men in the world," Takei explains about his character, Kaito Nakamura, who made his debut January 29. "My wealth is a surprise [to viewers] since my son, Hiro, was working in a cubicle as a little minion."

The minion himself, Oka, says he was taken aback the first time he met his onscreen father on the Heroes set, admitting that while in character Takei was "very intimidating. …
