Helping your child find her true passion in life is a great joy. My daughter, Julia Rose, has become a serious cook this past year and may be destined to fulfill her inner Paula Deen as she figures out where to go to college.

Julia's love of cooking took root years ago with intriguing recipes she created just for me. I've eaten fried lettuce and cookies made with soap-and I don't recommend either! But now she's learned real skills and recently cooked a formal dinner for eight adults that was out of this world.

The secret sauce for her success is Pete's Eats. My husband, Bob, met charismatic chef and cooking instructor Peter Shelsky at our high school's Career Day and was inspired to sign Julia up for a series of lessons (the first was How to Boil Water). Peter has taught Julia all the basics and lots more as he focuses on a different theme each lesson. But more important, he taught Julia how to think about cooking: how to plan a meal, shop for just the right ingredients, prepare in a sequence, present the food with beauty-and enjoy. …
