Export Quality Management

In November 1996 ITC's adviser on export quality management participated as a lecturer and resource person in a regional seminar on technical barriers to trade, convened jointly by WTO, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and ITC. The event took place in Pretoria and was hosted by the South African Bureau of Standards. Forty participants from 15 African countries and a representative of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) attended.

ITC's adviser lectured at the SADC Regional Conference on Quality in Harare in November. The meeting was attended by representatives of the 12 SADC member states. The conference was the first of its kind to be organized by the SADC Industry and Trade Coordination Division (SITCD) in cooperation with national standard bodies of the members. These activities in southern Africa were financed by ITC's Global Trust Fund.

An ITC consultant specialized in ISO 9000 quality management systems recently conducted a fact-finding and programming mission to Pakistan in response to a request from the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry regarding the application of these systems in small-scale export-oriented enterprises in the region. As a result, ITC is formulating a project proposal for the implementation of these standards as a means to facilitate access to European and North American markets. …
