ISU Students Rally for Palestine, Protest Israeli Attack

Iowa State University (ISU) students from the Middle East and across the Muslim world gathered on the university green April 4 in support of Palestine and in protest of Israel's brutal military reoccupation of the West Bank. The chants of the crowd of over 100 protesters and the sight of TV news crews from three Des Moines network affiliate stations drew out other students, faculty, and members of the local community despite the cool spring weather.

Many of the students are concerned that the Israeli military may be repeating the kinds of war crimes that characterized Israel's war in Lebanon in the early 1980s. The 1982 massacres at Sabra and Shatila refugee camps weigh especially heavily on the minds of students who have family and friends in illegally occupied Palestine.

Ashraf Hammad, a doctoral candidate in ISU's computer engineering program and a Palestinian from Jerusalem, helped organize the rally.

"My family in Jerusalem is OK," said Hammad, "but I am concerned about the people in Nablus. …
