At Schaumberg, Illinois-based Motorola Inc., that realization has changed the way the company tracks employees, even outside consultants. Instead of using locally assigned employee numbers or dealing with the headaches of Social Security numbers or their equivalent for each country (which could lead to radically different field lengths In different places), the company has created what It calls a commerce ID.
