Sustainability is the buzzword of the moment right across the public sector. But this is not just lip service, it's a totally different way of doing things - and public servants are right in the vanguard.

Controversial plans to introduce road-pricing schemes; ensuring newly built homes are carbon-neutral; and the push to meet the 2010 landfill targets are just some of the issues that have been filling their in-trays in recent months.

That's why the Public Servants of the Year Awards 2007 includes for the first time Going Green - the award for sustainability, sponsored by Barclaycard Business. It is one of the 12 categories that will celebrate the excellent work that goes on day in, day out in our public services.

These days, every major area of public policy includes an environmental dimension - everything from education and health through to transport and economic development. As a result, people working across the sector have been rising to the challenge, coming up with imaginative ways of improving services while protecting the environment
