Name: Bobby S. Mink

Job Title: Director, Oregon Department of Huron Services

Years of Service: I joined the agency in 1988, serving as deputy director from 1992 to 2001 and as director since April 2001

Rewards of the Job: Our department and its partners serve more than 850,000 needy Oregonians annually. Leading this department is particularly rewarding as we make our agency more integrated and less fragmented for clients with multiple needs.

Accomplishment Most Proud Of: My wife, Cathy, and I are the proud parents of two thriving teen-age boys. In the past year, my top professional accomplishment was convincing the legislature to authorize major restructuring of Oregon human services. The bill passed with only two dissenting votes, was supported by our major labor union, and has given us a mandate for change. I could list dozens of outstanding accomplishments by our excellent DHS staff.

Delivery of Public Services: We need to confront the challenges that have faced human services for decades. Among them, reestablishing confidence in government-operated human services; eliminating redundancy, duplication and fragmentation; developing systems of accountability; preparing managers to lead integrated and accountable human services systems; and hiring, training, and retaining competent staff. …
