The first Fuji Gold Medal Award was presented to Richard Edlund, ASC, at the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers annual Honors and Awards luncheon on October 21. The presentation was made at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The medal honors "the design and development of new or enhanced techniques or equipment that have contributed significantly to the advance of photographic or electronic image origination," according to SMPTE president Maurice L. French. Edlund, a long-time director of special effects, heads Boss Film Effects, producers of visual effects for such pictures as Ghostbusters, 2010, Poltergeist, Fright Night, Poltergeist II, Date With an Angel, and Die Hard. Earlier, at Industrial Light and Magic, he was a prominent member of the team responsible for the effects in Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and others.

Edlund has been awarded four Oscars and an Emmy for visual effects. He also holds three Academy Awards for technical achievements involving his part in the design and development of the Empire Camera, a beam-splitter optical composite device and the Zoom Aerio (ZAP) 65mm optical printer.

Leo Chaloukian, owner-president of Ryder Sound Services and a member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, is the new president and chairman of the executive committee of ATAS. His two-year term commenced October II.

An ASC associate member, Chaloukian served two terms as first and second vice president of the Academy. He has been chairman of the building committee for nine years, one of his duties being supervision of ATAS' involvement with "The Academy" real estate development in North Hollywood. This will be the future home of the Academy, its library. Hall of Fame, and the ATAS/UCLA Study Center. He has also served as chairman or member of several Academy committees and is active in many other industry organizations. …
