I remember when everything I did was influenced by my intense desire to be a great dancer. I practically lived in the studio. I cross-trained at the gym and practiced yoga to lengthen, strengthen and center myself. I never ate anything that I considered "bad" for me, never took a weekend off-let alone an entire week-and even thought socializing was a distraction. I rarely went to parties and when 1 did, I'd leave early. I ate, drank and slept ballet, and by the time 1 hit 25,1 was exhausted, uninspired, totally unhealthy and burned out. I took some time off from American Ballet Theatre (where I was in the corps) and within six months, I knew I wouldn't make it back. My stage career was over before I'd truly explored my artistic potential.

I know now that I need balance in my life if I want to be happy and healthy. I practice yoga without feeling like I need to be a yogini, eat food that is fresh and nutritious because it's delicious and unwind by playing with my 3-year-old son, Jack.

Dance Spirit has devoted some of every issue to nurturing a healthy mind, body and spirit, but in this one, we put wellness front and center. We've got tons of tips throughout. Dig in!

My advice to you as we head into the summer months: Go to your conventions, summer intensives and competitions, and work really hard-then, make it a priority to take a few weeks off. Play in the sun with your family and friends, eat well and enjoy your life. It will do you heaps of good. When you come back to the studio, you'll feel refreshed and ready to work. …
