In Our Doers Profile, we highlight some of the hardworking and talented individuals in public human services. This issue features Mary AuIt of the California Department of Social Services.

Name: Mary L. AuIt

Title: Deputy director, Children and Family Services Division

Years of Service: 18 months in California. Thirty-plus years in Texas, Arizona and Washington state.

Rewards of the Job: Working in child welfare is never just a job. I know every day that the decisions made at the state office influence the work that is done by the direct service staff and ultimately have the potential to change the lives of children and families. My commitment is to pay attention to staff needs as well as to the needs of the families and children we serve. Maybe that's because I spent 10 years as a direct service person.

Accomplishments Most Proud of: Introducing Family Group Decision Making in Arizona; any other occasions when I have been able to help include family members in decision-making about permanence for children and youth in the child welfare system.

Thoughts About the State of the Medicaid Program: Insufficient reimbursements for medical and dental care are making it difficult to find practitioners willing to treat foster children and youth. …
