High School Offers an Evangelizing Experience

On June 2, 2006, three young men from St. Joseph High School in Metuchen, New Jersey, were accepted into full communion with the Catholic Church. Donald Keenan, William Mclntyre and Samuel Murphy received confirmation and first holy Communion at the school closing Mass. Bishop Emeritus Edward T. Hughes presided and welcomed the three into the church in a first-time event at the high school.

Sam Murphy was a baptized Presbyterian and Will and Donnie were both baptized Catholics but had not received the other sacraments. The students all expressed an interest in becoming Catholic to their freshmen religion teacher, Brother Matthew Scanlon, a member of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart religious order that sponsors the school. Brother Matthew referred them to me, as dean of pastoral life, to explore the possibilities.

They believed as Catholics and wanted to be able to share Eucharist with their classmates.

The students then entered the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program at the school. This program consisted of weekly meetings with me to discuss and explore the Sunday Mass readings. An explanation of the theology of the sacraments was included as part of the program. …
