The National Directory for Catechesis: A Vision and Direction for the Future

With the publication of Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl's address, NCEA's Department of Chief Administrators of Catholic Education (CACE) continues its issuance of CACE Conversationskeynote addresses delivered during the annual NCEA convention or the annual fall meeting of CACE members.

"The National Directory for Catechesis: A Vision and Direction for the Future" was the topic of the lecture delivered during the 2006 convention in Atlanta. At the time of the convention, the speaker was bishop of Pittsburgh. Shortly after the convention he was appointed archbishop of Washington, D.C. In his address, Archbishop Wuerl focused on two themes that support the vision of the "National Directory for Catechesis": evangelization and inculturation.

"New evangelization," he said, "can be described as an ecclesial action that reaches out not just to those who have yet to hear of and encounter Christ but rather to those who are presumed to have some initial and minimal experience of the faith." It presents new problems because "in a way we are being asked to tell the story of Jesus all over again for the first time. …
