Even during Colorado's searing summer heat, the fresh breath of the Colorado River turns the Glenwood Canyon Recreational Trail into a hushed, cool retreat. The canyon's soaring walls keep temperatures low and provide a home for the canyon wrens, whose sweet, descending calls echo in the morning and evening.

The multiuse path, which opened four years ago, stretches from Glenwood Springs to a parking lot west of Dotsero. Though it parallels Interstate 70, the loudest sounds are from the restless Colorado River and the occasional train making the Denver-Glenwood Springs run.

The path is perfect for joggers, cyclists, strollers, and-though it wasn't built with them in mind-in-line skaters. Most of the route is broad, smooth, and irresistible as a skating tour of the canyon. Skaters should be alert to other users, however, particularly on weekends when foot traffic can be heavy.

If you've come to skate, limit yourself to the portion of the path between the Bair Ranch Rest Area and Hanging Lake trailhead. …
