The relatively new art of computer graphics was demonstrated dramatically at the ASC Clubhouse on October 28 by Digital Productions, Inc. This was the fifth in the State of the Art series initiated early this year by ASC president Stanley Cortez. Michael Whitney made the multi-media presentation. His father, John Whitney, a pioneer in the technique of computerized animation, and Gary Demos, a leading technician, stood by to field some of the audience's questions.

A discussion of the technical aspects of the process was accompanied by slides. Motion picture excerpts from productions such as 2001, The Last Slaughter, and DAR.Y.L, and videotapes of American and foreign commercials provided a fascinating overview of the variety of effects that can be achieved via computer.

More than 200 guests gathered at the Clubhouse on Oct. 31 for the biennial party for advertisers held in conjunction with the SMPTE conference. The evening was hosted by members of the Board of Governors, the Editorial Advisory Committee and American Cinematographer staff members. Departing guests were presented with monogrammed coffee mugs as a memento of the evening.

Daniel Fapp, ASC, was honored by Mount Olive #506, Masonic Lodge, on November 5 as a 50-year veteran of the organization. …
