Four new associate members of the A.S.C. were welcomed to the ranks during the summer months. They include Ron Lambert of Metrocolor Laboratories; John L. Mason and Sharon O'Brien of Eastman Kodak; and Garrett Brown, inventor of the Steadicam.

Lambert, who has been in the industry for 22 years, is head timer at Metro Labs.

Ms. O'Brien has worked in the motion picture field for 20 years and is presently a sales and engineering representative for Eastman in Hollywood. Her career began with Walt Disney Productions in New York and London. She assisted in production and writing of documentaries and with this background became known to Eastman's motion picture division.

There were no women marketing representatives at that time and after a year of engineering and product information projects in Rochester, Ms. O'Brien was assigned to Hollywood where she maintains close contact with directors of photography toward technological advancement in the field.

John Mason, a member of the sales and marketing team for Eastman, is a PhD graduate of Ohio State University and became an assistant professor of film at Wayne State University in 1973. He joined Eastman in 1982 and is now with the Hollywood division.

Garrett Brown not only invented the Steadicam in 1972 (for which he received an Academy Award) but went on to invent the Skycam in 1983. This is a flying camera run by computer controlled wires used extensively in the photography of sports events.

He teaches classes in the use of Steadicam every year in Italy, Australia and the United States. He also writes and performs the Molson and Amex radio commercials, a sideline that became a second career. In 1987 he received the Orson Welles lifetime achievement award in radio.

The cinematic efforts of Gordon Willis, ASC, were recently featured in a tribute to Willis held at the USC School of Cinema-Television. …
