Gordon Willis received the 1983 Billy Bitzer Award from International Photographers Local 644 in New York. Willis is currently shooting Woody Alien's Purple Rose of Cairo and his credits include Klute, The Godfather, The Parallax View, All the President's Men, Manhattan and Zelig.

Richard Edlund dazzled the membership at a recent dinner meeting with a sampler of effects shots illustrating his work on the Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Poltergeist. Edlund, who credits Joe Westheimer with giving him his first job in the industry, has recently returned to Los Angeles to take over the effects facility started by Douglas Trumbull and Richard Yuricich.

Also on the program at the same dinner meeting was a demonstration of the hot Head remote pan and tilt device by Laurie Frost of Kaleidoscope Cameras, who has recently opened an office in Hollywood.

Joseph Westheimer is chairman of the Scientific or Technical Awards Committee evaluating methods and devices for the 56th annual Academy Awards.

Associate members of the ASC are individuals who, although not directors of photography, are engaged in work that contributes to cinematography through either technical expertise, services or products. …
