World's Lightest 1'' Videotape Recorder

Stefan Kudelski, who designed the VA," tape recorder which revolutionized sound recording in the film industry, recently turned his attention to the 1" video recorder. With the help of Ampex his company has produced the Ampex Nagra VPR-5, a 1'' portable VTR which weighs less than 15 pounds and is 17½'' × 8½'' × 5½''. Its controls resemble those of the Nagra ¼'' recorder and it is constructed entirely out of an aluminum alloy. (A plastic cover designed for the first prototype has been replaced by a metal one in order to more evenly distribute the heat.)

The VPR-5 is designed to operate with 5½'' reels with its cover closed or it can accept conventional 60 minute reels with extenders on the spindles and the cover off. A 5½'' reel will record 20 minutes of material. The performance specifications of the VPR-5 are virtually identical with those of the Ampex VPR-20, a portable 1'' recorder which weighs over 3½ times as much as the VPR-5. …
