Memories of Music Monday 2007

Article excerpt

Well, it seems the shone sun gloriously in most places across the country as more than half a million people came together on May 7th to celebrate the power of music. From coast to coast to coast, we sent a message that music is important to us - in our lives and especially in our schools.

Half a million of us participated in Music Monday, but there are more than 5 million children in Canadian classrooms - and each and every one of them deserves a quality music education.

The Coalition for Music Education in Canada advocates for the contribution that music makes in the lives of all Canadians. We believe that music is key - in learning and in life. And we need to protect and nurture quality music programs in our schools so our young people can enjoy the life-long benefits music can bring.

So why learn music in school?

Well, the research shows - kids learn better, they work together better, they build their confidence and self-esteem while building important skills that will help them succeed in a creative economy.

But more than that, in a world that's increasingly troubled, where kids have more challenges and pressures than they deserve to face, where many kids are feeling disengaged and isolated - most importantly, music creates joy and music creates community.

And with Music Monday, we truly created a community through music. And we are all united in our goal to ensure that the lives of our children will be enriched by music.

Our goal for Music Monday is to be heard. We want the people at every level of government and administration who are making the important decisions about the education of our children - we want them to hear us - and start making the decisions that will restore music and the arts as unassailable pillars of a good education.

We all have a beautiful and powerful voice, and we used it to show everyone just what music means to us.

Thanks to all who helped make Music Monday a very special day for music education in Canada.
