Memphis may be known for Elvis Presley and his former home-turned-tourist attraction, Graceland, but the city is working on a bunch of mega projects that could grab some of that limelight.

Biodiesel Plants. Transformed from an old soap factory, the Memphis Biofuels LLC plant opened in 2006 and currently produces 50 million gallons of biodiesel made from soybeans, cottonseed oil and poultry fat. Milagro Biofuels of Memphis also opened last year, and the Mean Green Biofuels' $150 million facility should start production within one year.

One Beale. Slated fora 2010 debut, the $175 million mixeduse development will be the city's largest building with two 38-story towers, 150 condos, 240 hotel rooms, and 140,000 square feet of office and retail space.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Scheduled for completion in August, a new $114 million, 340,000-square-foot research and care center is part of a recent expansion that will more than double the original St. Jude's campus size.

Nucor Steel Mill. The $230 million plant is on schedule to begin producing in early 2008. The mill was purchased from the bankrupt Birmingham Steel Corp., and preliminary work to renovate and expand it has begun. …
