Power Mobile comes from Portable Add-ons, the aptly named supplier of portable computing products. It is an electronic adapter which allows mobile users to operate and recharge portable devices from a car battery. It converts the car's 12 volts into mains electricity via, you guessed it, the cigarette lighter socket. The mains 230V, 50Hz AC equivalent output is fed to the portable PC, cell phone etc. using the latter's standard cable and adapter.

Using a sophisticated switch power design, the Power Mobile pulls up to 150 watts at a conversion efficiency of 90 percent. With battery technology making little progress - a re-charge period of five hours for portable PCs is considered efficient - being able to use and re-charge from the car battery has to be good news.

The bad news could be that the laptop drains the battery. Disaster could follow stopping in a lay-by to type some notes if the car won't start afterwards. …
