HAIRSPRAY THE MUSICAL at the Movies

Big numbers, big hair and big gals will prevail, as Tracy Turnblad once again shouts, "Good Morning Baltimore!" from the big screen this summer in Hairspray.

Since writer/director John Waters first brought Tracy's impressive moves and more impressive 'do to the screen in 1988, fans have adored Ha/rsproy's strong message of acceptance-and, of course, its groovy '60s dance moves. The original film, which followed Tracy's transformation from a "pleasantly plump" girl (then portrayed by Ricki Lake) with dreams of dancing on "The Corny Collins Show" to a segregation-fighting star, was a perfect fit for the stage. In 2002, Hairspray became a Broadway musical, with memorable tunes like "The Nicest Kids In Town" and "You Can't Stop The Beat." Eight Tony Awards and a few famous faces later (Haylie Duff and Ashley Parker Angel have graced the stage thus far), the show is still going strong.

And now, the silver-screen version of the musical, set for release July 20, amps up the star wattage with John Travolta, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, Christopher Walken, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Brittany Snow and James Marsden joining unknown Nikki Blonsky, who was scooping ice cream and singing for tips at Cold Stone Creamery in Great Neck, NY, when she landed the part of Tracy. The star-studded cast came as a surprise to director Adam Shankman (A Walk to Remember and The Wedding Planner). "Everyone I asked said yes," he says. Besides honoring Hairspray's previous incarnations, assistant choreographer Jamal Sims, who worked mostly on dances for the segregated African American teens, wanted to make sure the vintage moves were authentic. …
