Every year the Professional Motion Picture Equipment Association (PMPEA) conducts a seminar in conjunction with the annual SMPTE Conference. This year the PMPEA and co-sponsor Eastman Kodak will present a very special program. The guest artist is special effects wizard Doug Trumbull. Trumbull is the undisputed king of special effects, having dazzled audiences with his visual magic in "2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY", "THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN", his own "SILENT RUNNING" and most recently the acclaimed "CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND".

Trumbull's presentation will include examples of his most recent visual creations, as well as some behind-thescenes demonstrations of his technique. The PMPEA seminar will be held in the Ziegfeld theatre, 141 W. 54th St., New York City (near 6th Ave.) on Monday night, October 30, 1978 at 6:15 p.m. The Ziegfeld is one of the most modern, well equipped theatres in New York, thus assuring the highest quality projection of Trumbull's visual effects, including examples in 70mm and 6track sound.

Trumbull will explain his new techniques for motor-driven traveling mattes, extensive multiple exposures, and computer controls that can store and recover precise shots. His innovations also include a new "motion control system" consisting of a digital electronic camera control system providing automatic and repeatable camera movements including pan, tilt and dolly.

This is sure to be the most dazzling, as well as the most informative, .seminar the PMPEA has held. Tickets will be sold at the door and in the SMPTE Conference lobby at the Americana on Sunday and Monday. However, because the program may be sold-out it is recommended that tickets be purchased in advance by sending $5.00 and a stamped self addressed envelope to: PMPEA; University Tower, Suite 809; 6440 Central Expressway; Dallas, TX 75206.

William D. Hedden, President of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, has announced a number of distinguished commendation awards to be presented during the Society's 120th Conference at the Americana hotel, New York, Monday, October 30. …
