A kindergarten boy was arranging his letters and pictures neatly on his mat for word building. As he considered the pictures, the teacher noted his uncertainty with one showing a little girl, hands to her face, with a tear falling from her eye. "What is this one?" the child asked. "The word to build here is sob," replied the teacher. "Do you know what sob means?"

The child replied, "Sure, it's a car."

Like most children, my son learned to sing the familiar A-B-C song before he was familiar with the printed alphabet. The first time he saw the alphabet written out, he asked, "Where's the other N?" I replied, "There is only one N." He thought for a moment and said, "No, listen." He very slowly sang the A-B-C song for me, with special emphasis on the ending: "Q-R-S-T-U-V-W-X-Y-N-Z."
