John Pilger (left) has a long track record as a campaigning journalist. His print journalism for Britain's Daily Mirror and his many TV documentary films have been welcome attacks on Western foreign policy. His latest film - his first for cinema - looks at how the US Government has gone about business in its own 'backyard' - Latin America.

Pilger is a very good interviewer who often gets On the record' much that his interviewees will regret. He has refined a grunting technique that could express assent, but is often ironical or even mocking. His meeting with an opponent of Venezuelan President Chavez, proudly showing off his expensive, bad-taste house, is excruciating. He doesn't, though, need to beguile the comically gungho Duane Claridge, one-time head of CIA operations in Latin America. …
