R.Ph.S Team Up with Insurer for Disease Management

Pharmacists at 15 Medicine Shoppe franchises around Kansas City are taking part in a disease management pilot program in partnership with CIGNA HealthCare.

Patients with peptic ulcer disease are the first CIGNA members being enrolled in the project to demonstrate whether pharmacist interventions led to improved outcomes and lower costs through patient education and appropriate care in support of a physician's treatment plan. The next phase of the project will target patients with congestive heart failure. The idea was to focus on one short-term disease and one long-term condition pinpointed by the insurer's claims database.

Improved overall health is the main goal of the pilot, said Gary Levine, R.Ph., senior v.p., Medicine Shoppe International. "We can do this effectively at the community pharmacy level through patient education and counseling, the use of computer software to track and monitor patients' progress with their drug therapy, and by providing feedback to physicians," he added. …
