Dr. Louay Safi (executive director, ILDC) and Nihad Awad (executive director, CAIR), recendy visited Germany and met with Muslim Germans and the Muslim American soldiers and their families posted to various American military bases in that country.

They addressed a three-day military family conference for Muslim soldiers and their families, which featured presentations on family values, Islamic teachings on peace and war, dealing with Islamophobia, and the Muslim experience with civil liberties in America. Maj. Abdul-Rasheed Mohammad, the army's ranking Muslim chaplain, made several presentations. Chaplain Ibraheem Abdurraheem also attended.

Awad, who introduced CAIR's human rights work, shared a session on Islamophobia with Dr. Safi, during which they examined the roots of this disturbing reality and made suggestions on how to deal with it. Copies of the "Islamic Horizons" issue on Islamophobia (Nov.-Dec. 2006) were distributed to participants. Chaplain James May (Installation Management Command [IMCOM]-Europe) stressed the important services rendered by Muslim chaplains and asked Muslims to take the initiative to introduce Islam to the larger community. …
