Art of an American Icon

RENO, NV.... Yosemite: Art of an American Icon opens at the Nevada Museum of Art on October 13. The traveling exhibition features over 140 paintings, photographs, and Native American baskets, including works by Albert Bierstodt, Ansel Adams, Eadweard Muybridge, Chiara Obata, Greg Kondos, Maurice Braun, and Anne Brigman. Organized chronologically into four sections, the exhibition explores the ways in which artists have helped shape the visual identity of Yosemite. The first section focuses on the westward expansion and the urge for involvement in nature in the 1 85Os-1 89Os. In the 190Os works such as Ansel Adams' photography and Carrie Bethel's baskets helped turn Yosemite into an icon. The exhibit closes with a glimpse into the park's future through the eyes of past and present artists. The exhibition is accompanied by a color catalog.
