ONE AUTHOR PLANS TO CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK ABOUT SUPERHEROES.

"Can you name a gay hero that straight people would know?" asks Perry Moore. "The fact that you even have to think about it is terrifying," he says.

With his first novel, Moore plans to change that. Written for young adults, Hero is the coming-of-age story of Thorn Creed, a gay superhero (he can heal with his hands), who, in the course of 432 pages, manages to come out, have his first same-sex kiss-and oh, save the world. Perhaps more miraculous is that this groundbreaking volume is being published by Hyperion Books, a unit of Disney.

"I have had nothing but support from Hyperion," says Moore, who is already part of the Disney family, having produced the first of the Narnia films. If all goes as planned, Hero will beget a series, providing Disney with its first gay franchise. Moore has also piqued the interest of a comic book giant: Stan Lee, the legendary SpiderMan creator, is already in talks to produce Hero's screen adaptation. …
