SWAIA LETTER

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, and over 1,200 artistmembers of the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA), I would like to cordially welcome you to the 2002 Santa Fe Indian Market and this special issue of Southwest Art-the official magazine of Santa Fe Indian Market.

As Santa Fe Indian Market celebrates its 81st year, it seems timely to consider why we are here, what keeps Indian Market integrally vital and strong (80,000 attendees last year), and how we might best ensure Indian Market's growth and prosperity for generations to come (for the next 81 years!). In this vein, and in the wake of the tragic events of September 11, SWAIA is dedicating this 2002 Santa Fe Indian Market to the "Spirit of Remembrance."

While 9/11 may have demonstrated what seems disconnected in our present-day world, it has also provided a profound catalyst for remembering that which is ultimately sacred and meaningful-namely life, and its continuity and creativity. The exquisite Native American art that Indian Market-goers behold is appreciably more than eye-enticing alone. It has been blessed by the ages and passed down from generations of traditional craftspeople, artist families, and visionaries. Perhaps this explains why ever-increasing numbers of people are so attracted to touching, learning about, and garnering deeper appreciation for these art forms through their commerce. Time and study has proven these art forms (and the lineage of inspired artists creating them) as inherently connecting to a deeper life dimension, a perspective which is truly life-affirming.
