INFORMING ON NEW ORLEANS

The article is very informative (see "Staying Afloat in New Orleans," Nov. 29, 2007). I didn't realize the illiteracy rate in New Orleans was so high, but it's good to know that there are people trying to help the situation. Thanks, Dorothy, for writing the article.

Although it would appear that an investigation of the situation at UC Riverside is warranted, it is telling that the three people hired to investigate are all men.

Imagine if youth from poor families, their teachers and their counselors knew about and understood the vast difference such information would make in the lives of thousands of students. Bright students are now told by ignorant, biased and jealous counselors that they cannot go to the top colleges. …
